Archaeological sites and artifacts are protected under Alberta's Historical Resources Act. It is illegal to collect, disturb, excavate, or alter archaeological resources without the appropriate permits. Heritage resources found in Alberta also cannot be traded, sold, or moved across provincial boundaries.
Since artifacts do not preserve equally over time, archaeologists rely on what remains and, just as importantly, the context around where the objects are found to better understand the past.
If you have found an artifact, follow these steps:
- Leave it. Do not move archaeological materials from where you find them. Removing them can damage the site and reduce what can be learned from it.
- Photograph it. Take a clear photo and note any visible features. Include a ruler, coin, or pen for scale.
- Locate it. Record the item’s geographic position using a GPS, paper map, or mobile device. If these are unavailable, write detailed notes about the surrounding area and provide clear directions to the item.
- Report it using the form below. Our staff will review your submission, provide more information about the item(s), and advise you on the appropriate next steps.
