Hours & admission
Please note: our team is specialized to Indigenous art and item history in Alberta, and your item may be outside of our scope. In this event, we may refer you to another Department, Institution, or community.
Please note: Our collections policy helps us decide what items to accept. We prioritize contemporary works, items with traceable ownership, and items that relate to Alberta’s History. We may refer you to another Institution, community, or cultural center if we believe your item would be a better fit with another community.
Our team may connect with you to clarify information.
Please note: Some items may not have artists, owners, communities, or nations recorded when they were collected or came to us, in this event we will use our best judgment and continue to update files as we know the items we care for better. Requests like this need time to research records and files and may take a while to prepare.
The Indigenous Collection includes a separate room where ceremonial items rest. These items are cared for under the advice of our Indigenous Advisory Panel. This panel is made of elders, ceremonialists, artists, and society members that are representatives of their Nation. These items are not made open for the public but to families, ceremonial rights holders, and society members. Our elders give us guidelines on how these items are to be handled and by who. If you are a rights holder and would like to attend to the spiritual needs of these items, please connect with us and we can make arrangements.
Who else will be attending? (Up to 12 additional people. Please provide full names.)
The Indigenous Collection houses about 19,000 items. Their location varies from gallery display, conservation treatment, to warehouse and collection storage. Depending on the item(s) you would like to visit, we may need time to arrange the availability of items. We have many families who visit with their belongings, and it can take some time to arrange a date that works. Your date will be a placeholder subject to change.
